This page is for Beagle owners choosing everyday gear. Three things about Beagles change what you buy: they're scent hounds who follow their nose, so the harness has to stay put; they have a short double coat that sheds, more so in spring; and they come in two height varieties, so "medium" sizing doesn't always fit.
Our verdict. We haven't used this gear ourselves. We'd start with a well-fitted harness with two leash points, a deshedding tool sized for short hair, and a crash-tested crate for the car. The AKC says Beagles must always be walked on a leash, so the harness is the piece you'll use most.

What matters for Beagle gear
The nose leads, the body follows. The AKC says a Beagle "will not be able to resist the urge to run off in pursuit of a compelling scent", so walks must always be on a leash. It also calls Beagles escape artists in the yard. For gear, that means a harness that fits snugly, with no loose strap to back out of, and a leash you hold onto.
The coat sheds year-round. The AKC describes a smooth, dense double coat that sheds moderately all year, with spring as shedding season. It suggests weekly brushing with a medium-bristle brush, a rubber grooming mitt or a hound glove.
Health, where it touches gear.
- VCA lists the Beagle among breeds with a high incidence of intervertebral disc disease. VCA also says a disc rupture that follows a small jump was usually caused by chronic disc degeneration, not by the jump itself. We'd still give an older Beagle steps up to the bed or sofa.
- The AKC says responsible breeders screen for hip dysplasia and luxating patella. A firm foam bed is a sensible pick for any dog with joint concerns.
- The AKC also says to check a Beagle's ears weekly. No gear needed, just a habit.
No harness, bed or set of stairs treats or prevents back, hip or knee problems. They can make daily life easier. This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog, talk to your vet.
Best gear for a Beagle
Best harness for beagles: Ruffwear Front Range
Evidence level: Tested by Treeline Review
Treeline Review named the Front Range its best harness for small dogs and found it fits boxy small dogs well. A Beagle is "big for their inches", as the AKC puts it, which is exactly that build. You get a back clip for sniffy strolls and a front loop for a dog who leans into the leash, plus four adjustment points so the straps sit snug. Treeline wouldn't recommend it over about 30 lb, which is the top of the Beagle range.
- Size to buy: Ruffwear sizes by girth: XS 17–22", S 22–27". Measure the widest part of the ribcage behind the front legs, and size up if you're between sizes (Ruffwear)
- Keep in mind: no handle, and Treeline found it short in the back on bigger dogs
Budget pick: rabbitgoo No-Pull Dog Harness. Evidence level: tested by Treeline Review. Treeline called it a budget-friendly alternative to the Front Range that fits better on small, square-built dogs. Front and back rings, a top handle and four adjustable straps. It's a padded vest, so it runs warmer in summer.
A harness manages pulling; it doesn't teach your dog to stop. See our stop pulling guide for the training side.
Best brush for beagles: FURminator Undercoat deShedding Tool
Evidence level: Specs only (Canine Journal's best overall deshedding tool)
A stainless steel edge reaches through the topcoat to loose undercoat, and a button pushes the hair off. For a Beagle, buy the short-hair version in the size for your dog's weight; picking the wrong version is the most common mistake. Use it lightly, about once a week in shedding season, since overuse can damage the coat. Between sessions, the AKC's rubber mitt or hound glove is a gentle everyday option.
More tools and a shedding routine: dog shedding a lot.
Best bed: Casper Dog Bed
Evidence level: Tested by TechGearLab and by Reviewed
A foam bed with a machine-washable cover, tested by TechGearLab and by Reviewed (one year with one dog). The Small is rated to 30 lb and the Medium to 60 lb.
- Size to buy: Small for a 13-inch Beagle; the Medium gives a 15-inch Beagle room to sprawl
- Why it suits a Beagle: foam rather than fiber fill, and a cover you can wash after muddy scent walks
See the orthopedic dog bed guide for more foam options.
Best car crate: Gunner G1 Kennel
Evidence level: Independently certified (CPS)
The Center for Pet Safety lists the Gunner G1 Kennel with Strength Rated Anchor Straps as CPS Certified, 5 Star, in Small (tested with a 30 lb test dog) and Medium (45 lb test dog), plus Intermediate. A Beagle fits the Small or Medium.
- Size to buy: check your dog's height and length against Gunner's interior sizes: Small 21.75×14.5×15.5", Medium 25×18×19.75"
- Keep in mind: the certification covers the crate with Gunner's anchor straps. Gunner says gunner.com is its only authorized retailer unless it says otherwise, so check the Amazon seller
A crash-tested harness is the other route; Sleepypod's Clickit Sport is CPS Certified, but CPS rates the Small to 25 lb and the Medium from 45 lb, so many 20–30 lb Beagles fall between sizes. Details in our travel dog crate guide and dog car seat guide.
Stairs for older Beagles: PetSafe CozyUp Folding Pet Steps
Evidence level: Specs only (K9 of Mine's best budget pet steps)
Carpeted treads with raised side edges, and it folds flat under the bed. The Medium is 20" tall and the Large 25", which covers most sofas and beds.
- Keep in mind: rubber feet may slip on slick floors (K9 of Mine)
Measure your bed first; our dog stairs guide shows how.
Beagle owner FAQs
What's the best harness for beagles that pull?
A harness with a front clip, like the Ruffwear Front Range, gives you more control than a back clip alone. Treeline Review found it fits boxy small dogs well. Pair it with leash training: a harness manages pulling but doesn't stop it. Our stop pulling guide covers the training steps.
Is there an escape-proof harness for beagles?
We haven't found a harness whose maker or a named tester backs an "escape-proof" claim for Beagles, so we don't use that label. What helps is fit: measure the chest, use every adjustment point, and recheck as your Beagle's weight or winter coat changes. The AKC says Beagles should always be walked on a leash.
What type of brush is best for beagles?
The AKC suggests a medium-bristle brush, a rubber grooming mitt or a hound glove, once a week. In spring shedding season, a deshedding tool sized for short hair, such as the FURminator short-hair version, pulls out more loose undercoat. Use it lightly so you don't damage the coat.
What size crate does a Beagle need?
For the car, the Gunner G1 Small or Medium, both CPS Certified. Pick by your dog's height and length against Gunner's interior sizes, not by weight alone. A 13-inch Beagle under 20 lb usually needs less space than a 15-inch Beagle at 30 lb. The AKC gives both size ranges.
Do Beagles need a lot of exercise gear?
The AKC says at least an hour of exercise a day, and always on a leash. So the essentials are a well-fitted harness and a good leash. A fenced yard needs to be at least five feet tall and extend underground, per the AKC, to stop tunneling escapes.
Fit the harness well, brush weekly, and buckle the crate in. That's most of what a Beagle needs from you.
