A dog car seat keeps your dog in one place, off your lap and away from the gear stick, and lifts a small dog high enough to see out. That's genuinely useful. But it's worth being honest from the start: most dog car seats are comfort and anti-distraction gear, not crash protection. When the Center for Pet Safety crash-tested popular booster seats, they performed poorly. This guide shows which products are crash-test certified, and how to use a booster sensibly if that's what your dog needs.

Crash tested dog car seat: what the testing actually found

The Center for Pet Safety (CPS) crash-tests pet travel products. In its testing of four popular booster seats (PupSaver, Snoozer Lookout I, Top Paw and Kurgo Skybox), none earned a Top Performer result. The PupSaver rotated and rolled onto its side, and its instructions recommended the front seat, which CPS calls unsafe because of airbags.

What that means for you:

  • A booster seat is not crash protection. Don't buy one expecting it to protect your dog in a collision, whatever the box says.
  • "Crash-tested" on a listing isn't the same as CPS certified. Some brands run their own tests. Look for CPS certification.
  • The only CPS-certified "seats" are small Sleepypod carriers, for dogs up to 15 lb.
  • For large dogs there is no certified car seat. The safer options are a CPS 5-star harness like the Clickit Sport, or a crash-rated crate (see our heavy duty dog crate picks: the Gunner G1 and Lucky Kennel carry a 5-star CPS crash rating per K9 of Mine).

Three rules for any dog in any seat: ride in the back seat, never the front (airbags); clip the tether to a harness, never a collar; and keep the tether short enough that your dog can't reach the footwell or the front seats.

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

Best for: small dogs up to 15 lb, when safety comes first.

The Mobile Pet Bed is a bed, carrier and car seat in one. Sleepypod carriers were the first pet restraints to meet CPS crash-test guidelines, and CPS rates the Mobile Pet Bed for dogs up to 15 lb. At home it's a cozy bed, so your dog already knows it before the first trip.

What we like

  • CPS crash-test certified, rated to 15 lb
  • Works as a bed, carrier and car seat
  • Light at 4.5 lb

Keep in mind

  • Small dogs only
  • Expensive for a carrier
  • Enclosed, so your dog can't look out of the window

Large dog car seat alternative: Sleepypod Clickit Sport

Best for: medium and large dogs who ride on the back seat.

There isn't a certified large dog car seat, so for big dogs we recommend this instead. The Clickit Sport is a crash-tested harness that CPS lists as certified, and it's the only harness with a CPS five-star rating in each size. It has three points of contact with the seatbelt and works as a walking harness too.

What we like

  • CPS certified, 5-star in every size
  • Three points of seatbelt contact
  • Doubles as a walking harness

Keep in mind

  • It isn't a "seat": your dog sits or lies on the car seat itself (a back seat cover for large dogs protects the upholstery)
  • Fitting is fiddly the first few times
  • Pricier than a standard harness
  • Weight ratings per size vary between sources: check the maker's size chart against your dog's weight and girth

Key specs: harness with three points of seatbelt contact · several sizes · CPS certified

Small dog car seat: how to choose

If safety in a crash is the priority

For dogs up to 15 lb, a CPS-certified Sleepypod carrier is the answer. It's less fun for a dog who likes the view, but it's the only certified option.

If your small dog gets anxious or restless

A booster seat that lets them see out, plus a short tether to a harness, keeps many small dogs calmer and off your lap. Just don't treat it as crash protection.

Check these on every booster

  • How it attaches: the seat belt should thread through the base or straps, so the seat can't slide.
  • Tether: short, with a swivel clip, attached to a harness.
  • Fit: your dog should be able to sit and lie down without spilling over the edge.
  • Washable cover: car sickness and muddy paws happen.

Large dog car seat options

For dogs over about 30 lb, there's no booster that fits well and no certified seat. Your realistic choices:

  1. A CPS-certified harness like the Clickit Sport, on the back seat, with a seat cover underneath.
  2. A crash-rated crate, secured in the cargo area. Rotomolded kennels like the Gunner G1 and Lucky Kennel carry 5-star CPS crash ratings per K9 of Mine; see our heavy duty dog crate guide.
  3. Getting in and out: if your big dog struggles to jump into the car, a dog ramp for the car helps.

FAQs

Are dog car seats safe in a crash?

Most aren't designed or proven to protect in a crash. In Center for Pet Safety testing of four popular booster seats, none earned a Top Performer result. The only CPS-certified seats are small Sleepypod carriers for dogs up to 15 lb.

Is there a crash tested dog car seat for large dogs?

Not a certified seat. For large dogs, use a CPS-certified harness like the Sleepypod Clickit Sport on the back seat, or a crash-rated crate secured in the car.

What is the best small dog car seat?

For crash safety, the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed (CPS certified to 15 lb). For a small dog who wants to see out, a booster like the K&H Bucket Booster or Kurgo Skybox, used with a harness on the back seat, but these aren't crash protection.

Do dog booster seats work?

They work for what they're good at: keeping a small dog contained, off your lap and able to see out, which can make the drive calmer for both of you. They don't protect your dog in a crash.

Can my dog ride in the front seat in a car seat?

No. CPS calls the front seat unsafe because of airbags. Put any dog car seat, carrier or harness setup in the back seat.

Choose for safety first, comfort second, and never skip the harness and the back seat. Your dog gets a calmer ride, and you get to keep your eyes on the road.
