"Orthopedic" is printed on a lot of dog beds, and nobody checks it. Some are a solid slab of memory foam; others are a bag of shredded foam with a nice cover. A true orthopedic dog bed is built to spread your dog's weight evenly so hips, elbows and shoulders don't press through to the floor. This guide shows you how to spot the real thing and gives five picks, from a budget-friendly waterproof bed to a 7-inch slab for giant breeds.

What makes a dog bed orthopedic?
There's no official standard, so use this checklist. A bed that misses the first two points isn't one we'd call orthopedic, whatever the label says.
- Solid foam, not fill. Look for a solid foam slab, ideally memory foam over a high-density support layer. Shredded foam, egg-crate foam and polyfill shift and flatten.
- Thick enough for the dog's weight. As a rough guide, at least 4 inches for a medium dog and around 7 inches for large and giant breeds. Press your palm hard into the center: if you feel the floor, it's too thin.
- A waterproof liner. Older dogs have accidents, and foam that soaks up urine can't be washed. A waterproof inner cover protects the foam.
- A washable outer cover. It should unzip and go in the washing machine.
- Easy to get on. A low edge or a low front matters for a stiff dog. That's the focus of our best dog beds for senior dogs guide, which covers more low-entry picks than this page.
Big Barker 7" Orthopedic Dog Bed with Headrest
Best for: large and giant breeds, especially heavy dogs who like a pillow.
Canine Journal names the Big Barker its best orthopedic bed for large breeds. It's 7 inches of three-layer foam made in the USA, with a headrest bolster along one side. The brand offers a 10-year warranty that the bed won't flatten (it promises it keeps 90% of its shape). Big Barker also cites a University of Pennsylvania study on its beds; that is the brand's own claim.
What we like
- 7 inches of foam, thick enough for the biggest dogs
- Headrest along one side for chin-resters
- 10-year warranty against flattening
- Washable cover
Keep in mind
- No waterproofing (Canine Journal), so add a waterproof liner for a dog with accidents
- One of the most expensive beds here
- Overkill for small dogs
Key specs: 7" three-layer foam · Large, XL and Giant (60 × 48 × 7") · washable cover
Casper Dog Bed
Best for: small to large dogs up to about 90 lb who sleep flat out.
The Casper uses memory foam on top of a polyurethane support layer, the same two-layer idea as a good human mattress. Canine Journal picks it as the easiest orthopedic bed to clean: the microfiber cover is rip-resistant, and an extra layer of top fabric is there to stand up to digging. Testers report no sagging over time (Canine Journal).
What we like
- Memory foam over a firm support base
- Rip-resistant, easy-clean cover that handles diggers
- Three sizes with clear weight guides
- Looks tidy in a living room
Keep in mind
- Premium priced
- The Large is for dogs up to about 90 lb, so giant breeds need the Big Barker
- Some owners report a new-foam smell at first; air it out for a day
Key specs: Small 26 × 19 × 6" (up to 30 lb) · Medium 33 × 25 × 6" (up to 60 lb) · Large 45 × 35 × 7" (up to 90 lb)
Brindle Waterproof Designer Memory Foam Bed
Best for: small and medium dogs, and anyone who needs a waterproof bed on a budget.
Canine Journal's pick for medium dogs. It's a proper two-layer build: 2 inches of memory foam over 2 inches of high-density support foam, inside a fully waterproof encasement. That waterproof layer is the big win at this price, and the 3-year warranty is a nice extra.
What we like
- Real memory foam over support foam, 4 inches total
- Fully waterproof inner cover protects the foam
- Budget-friendly for an orthopedic memory foam dog bed
- 3-year warranty
Keep in mind
- Not for very large or giant breeds (Canine Journal): 4 inches is too thin for them
- No cooling layer
- Some owners mention zipper complaints
Key specs: 4" total (2" memory + 2" support foam) · Small, Medium (34 × 22"), Large · waterproof encasement

BuddyRest Crown Supreme Bed
Best for: dogs who sleep pressed against a bolster, in homes that want a bed to last.
Canine Journal's pick for bolster support. The core is gel-infused orthopedic foam, the cover is Crypton fabric (made to resist stains and odors), and the beds are handmade in the USA. A 10-year warranty matches the Big Barker's.
What we like
- Gel-infused orthopedic foam with high bolsters
- Crypton fabric resists stains and smells
- Handmade in the USA
- 10-year warranty
Keep in mind
- No inner waterproof liner (Canine Journal), so add one if needed
- Expensive
- The bolsters make it taller to step into than a flat mattress
Key specs: Medium, Large (40 × 30 × 11"), XL · gel-infused foam · Crypton fabric
The Dog's Bed Orthopedic Foam Bed
Best for: stiff dogs who find it hard to step over a bolster.
Canine Journal includes this one for dogs who are uncomfortable getting around. It has 2 inches of high-stability foam over 2 inches of high-density foam, bolsters for the neck, and a low-access front so your dog can walk straight on instead of stepping over a rim. A waterproof mattress protector comes with it.
What we like
- Low front for an easy step on
- Neck bolsters on the other sides
- Waterproof mattress protector included
- Wide size range, S to XXL
Keep in mind
- Canine Journal notes some reports of the foam flattening quickly
- 4 inches total, so check the size and your dog's weight
Key specs: 4" total (2" + 2" foam) · S to XXL · Large 43.5 × 34 × 10" · waterproof protector
Memory foam dog bed vs orthopedic foam: what's the difference?
People use the two terms as if they meant the same thing. They don't, quite.
- Memory foam softens with body heat and molds around your dog. It feels plush and spreads pressure, but on its own it can let a heavy dog sink too far.
- High-density support foam is firmer and springier. It stops the dog bottoming out.
- An orthopedic memory foam dog bed usually layers the two: a comfort layer of memory foam on top of a thicker support base. The Big Barker, Casper and Brindle all use this layered build.
Gel-infused memory foam (BuddyRest) is memory foam with gel beads mixed in. Brands say it sleeps a little cooler. If your dog runs hot, an elevated dog bed with airflow underneath is the other route; you can put a thin pad on top for comfort.
Large orthopedic dog bed: sizing it right
Big dogs are where thin orthopedic beds fall apart fastest. For any dog over about 60 lb:
- Go thick. Aim for around 7 inches of foam. Of the picks here, the Big Barker and the Casper Large (up to about 90 lb) reach 7 inches.
- Measure your dog asleep and stretched out, nose to tail base, and add 8–12 inches.
- Check the weight rating where the bed gives one, and leave a margin.

Quick rules
- Heavy dog? Thickness first: Big Barker.
- Accidents? Waterproof first: Brindle, or The Dog's Bed with its protector.
- Stiff dog that hesitates at the edge? Low front first: The Dog's Bed.
- Getting on your bed is the hard part, not lying down? A bed ramp helps more than any mattress: see our best dog ramp for bed picks.
This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog, talk to your vet. An orthopedic bed is designed to support your dog's body and can make lying down and getting up easier on joints, but it doesn't treat arthritis, hip dysplasia or any other condition. The American Kennel Club lists stiffness, limping and reluctance to jump among the common signs of arthritis, so get those checked.
FAQs
Is an orthopedic dog bed worth it?
For older, heavy or stiff dogs, many owners find a solid foam bed worth it: it spreads weight evenly and doesn't flatten like polyfill. Young, small dogs who curl up often do fine on a simpler, softer bed.
What is the best memory foam dog bed?
For medium dogs on a budget, the Brindle's 2" memory foam over 2" support foam with a waterproof cover is a strong pick. For larger dogs, the Casper layers memory foam over a support base and comes in three sizes up to about 90 lb.
What is the best large orthopedic dog bed?
The Big Barker, with 7 inches of three-layer foam, Giant sizes up to 60 × 48 inches and a 10-year warranty against flattening. Add a waterproof liner, because it doesn't come with one.
Is an orthopedic memory foam dog bed good for dogs with arthritis?
It's designed to support the body and make lying down easier on joints, and many owners of arthritic dogs use one. It isn't a treatment, so pair it with your vet's advice, and choose a low-entry bed if stepping over a rim is hard.
How thick should an orthopedic dog bed be?
As a guide, at least 4 inches of solid foam for medium dogs and around 7 inches for large and giant breeds. Press your hand into the center: if you can feel the floor, it's too thin for a heavy dog.
Pick the foam thickness for your dog's weight, add waterproofing if you need it, and your dog gets a bed that's still doing its job years from now.
