This page is for French bulldog owners kitting out a new puppy or replacing gear that never quite fit. Three things about Frenchies shape almost every choice: a short, flat face that makes neck pressure and heat matter more than for most dogs, a compact, broad-chested body under 28 lb that standard small sizes often fit badly, and a back the AKC says is worth protecting.
How we picked. We haven't used these products ourselves. The picks come from our existing roundups, so they match what we recommend elsewhere on the site, and each shows its evidence level: a named tester, a crash certification, or specs only.

What matters for French bulldog gear
Nothing around the throat. The AKC says the short face "can make their breathing less efficient than that of long-nosed breeds", so Frenchies have less tolerance for heat, exercise and stress. A 2025 study in Veterinary Medicine and Science found that collars raised eye pressure in brachycephalic dogs even when standing still, while harnesses had little effect. For walks, that points to a harness that sits low on the chest. Skip head halters too.
Heat changes the gear list. The AKC says Frenchies "do poorly in hot or humid weather" and should never exert themselves in it. So pick a light, strappy harness over a full vest for summer, and a bed that doesn't trap heat. Whole Dog Journal notes memory foam holds warmth, which is why we suggest a breathable cot as a second bed.
The back and the furniture. The AKC notes that, like other dwarf breeds, Frenchies may have abnormal vertebrae or early disc degeneration, and that most back problems with symptoms come from disc disease. A ramp to your bed or sofa saves a lot of jumping on and off. It won't prevent a disc problem, but it cuts down the daily jolts.
Folds and coat. The AKC suggests weekly brushing with a medium-bristle brush, a rubber mitt or a hound glove, and says the facial folds "should be kept clean and dry".
This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog, talk to your vet. The AKC advises a vet check, including an airway evaluation, if your Frenchie overheats or gets stressed too easily, with noisy breathing or foamy spit. If your dog's gums look pale or blue, or they yelp when picked up, drag a back paw or won't move, call your vet right away.
Best gear for a French bulldog
Harness: Ruffwear Front Range
Size to buy: measure the chest. Ruffwear's XS covers 17–22 in and S 22–27 in, which spans most adult Frenchies. Evidence level: Tested by Treeline Review and by The Frenchie Life.
Why it suits a Frenchie: it's the one harness two independent testers walked a boxy little dog in. Treeline Review's certified trainer wrote that for dogs like French bulldogs and pugs it "fits safely and comfortably", and The Frenchie Life's owner uses it on pulling days. It has a back clip, a front loop, four adjustment points and foam padding, and nothing sits on the throat.
If your Frenchie fights anything going over the head, or gets rubbed raw by straps, try the Curli Belka Comfort, a soft air-mesh step-in harness. The Frenchie Life's owner says it cleared up their dog's harness rubbing. Evidence level: Tested by The Frenchie Life. It's not for heavy pullers.
All five of our picks, with a cross-brand size chart, are in best Frenchie harness.
Grooming: DELOMO Pet Grooming Gloves
Size to buy: one size (a pair of gloves). Evidence level: Specs only; a Canine Journal pick.
Why it suits a Frenchie: the AKC names a rubber grooming mitt as one of the right tools for this coat, and a glove feels like petting to a dog who won't sit still for a brush. Canine Journal recommends these silicone gloves for between grooming sessions. A weekly once-over picks up loose hair. Then wipe the facial folds with a soft damp cloth and dry them well.
Bed: Casper Dog Bed, Small
Size to buy: Small (26 × 19 in, rated to 30 lb). Evidence level: Tested by TechGearLab and Reviewed.
Why it suits a Frenchie: TechGearLab made the Casper its best overall bed after testing 13, and Reviewed used one for a full year with no breakdown in the foam. It's memory foam over a firmer support layer, with low bolsters a Frenchie can lean on, and the Small's weight rating covers the whole breed standard. Keep in mind that it isn't waterproof, and memory foam holds warmth. Casper lists the sleep area at 3.5 inches deep in every size.
For summer, add a breathable cot. The Coolaroo Original Elevated Pet Bed uses knitted HDPE fabric that lets air move under your dog and hoses clean, and TechGearLab liked its breathability. Evidence level: Specs only. More options are in our elevated dog bed picks.
Crate: Gunner G1 Kennel, Small
Size to buy: Small. Evidence level: Independently certified (CPS), tested with a 30 lb test dog.
Why it suits a Frenchie: the Center for Pet Safety lists the Gunner G1 with its Strength Rated Anchor Straps as CPS Certified, 5 Star, and the Small was certified in June 2017 with a 30 lb test dog. That covers a Frenchie under the AKC's 28 lb limit, and the same crate works as a den at home. It's an enclosed rotomolded shell, so don't leave it in the sun on a hot day. Gunner says gunner.com is its only authorized retailer unless it states otherwise, so check the Amazon seller.
Why not a crash-tested harness instead? CPS rates the Sleepypod Clickit Sport Small to 25 lb and the Medium from 45 lb, so a 26 to 28 lb Frenchie falls between them. A certified crate avoids that gap. More in our travel dog crate guide.
Ramp: DoggoRamps Bed Ramp for Small Dogs
Size to buy: set it to your mattress height (seven settings up to 37 in). Evidence level: Specs only (listing); Whole Dog Journal reviewed the brand's larger ramp.
Why it suits a Frenchie: a narrow 15-inch track with side rails, and it folds to 4 inches when you don't need it. A long ramp gives a gentler slope than a short one, and a gentle slope is what you want for a stocky dog with a short stride. Measure the top of your mattress first; our dog ramp for bed roundup explains how.
French bulldog owner FAQs
What's the best harness for a French bulldog?
One that sits low on the chest, never on the throat, and leaves the shoulders free. We'd start with the Ruffwear Front Range, which a certified trainer at Treeline Review and a Frenchie owner both tested. For a dog who hates things over the head, the Curli Belka step-in is the softer alternative.
What's the best harness for a French bulldog puppy?
An adjustable one you can let out as they grow, like the Ruffwear Front Range, which starts at XXS (13–17 inch chest). Measure the chest every couple of weeks, because puppies outgrow gear fast and a tight harness is uncomfortable for a flat-faced dog. Check that two fingers fit under each strap.
What kind of bed is best for a French bulldog?
A supportive foam bed in Small, plus somewhere cool to lie in summer. Frenchies handle heat poorly, according to the AKC, and memory foam holds warmth, so a breathable raised cot makes a good second bed for hot days. Check the weight rating: the Casper Small is rated to 30 lb.
Does a French bulldog need a ramp?
It's a good idea if your Frenchie gets on your bed or sofa. The AKC notes that Frenchies may have abnormal vertebrae or early disc degeneration, and a ramp replaces the jump down, which is the hard part. Teach it on the flat first with treats, then set it against the furniture.
Can French bulldogs swim?
The AKC says Frenchies "cannot swim" because of their front-heavy build and should never be left unattended near a tub, pool or any water. If your dog goes on a boat or near a pool, a well-fitted dog life jacket with a grab handle is sensible, but keep a hand on your dog anyway.
Measure the chest before you buy anything else. A harness that fits is the piece of Frenchie gear that matters most on every walk.
