This page is for Chihuahua owners picking gear for a very small dog. Three things drive every choice: size (the AKC standard caps the weight at 6 pounds, so most "small" gear is too big), a neck and windpipe you want to keep leash pressure off, and a dog who feels the cold and spends a lot of time being carried.
Our verdict. We haven't used this gear ourselves. We'd walk a Chihuahua on a harness, never by a collar alone, travel in a CPS Certified carrier, and give them a snug bed they can burrow into. The harness and carrier choices rest on AKC and Center for Pet Safety sources, cited below.

What matters for Chihuahua gear
Keep pressure off the throat. The AKC says tracheal collapse is "usually seen in certain toy breeds", and that it "tends to be more common in smaller dogs". Among the ways the AKC lists to manage it is "using a dog harness instead of a collar (to avoid putting pressure on the dog's throat)". VCA says the same: use a harness rather than a collar. The Chihuahua is in the AKC's Toy Group, so we'd use a harness from day one, whether or not your dog has any symptoms.
Knees and jumping. The AKC lists patellar luxation (loose kneecaps) among issues that can affect the breed. For a dog this size, a sofa is a big jump. Stairs or a ramp make the trip down easier.
Cold and carrying. The AKC says special care must be taken in cold weather, and that if your Chihuahua is panting and working hard to keep up on a walk, it's time to pick them up and carry them home. So a carrier is everyday gear, not just vet-trip gear.
The coat. The AKC says smooth coats need only occasional brushing, while long coats need brushing at least weekly to avoid tangles and mats. Both need regular nail trims.
A harness, stairs or carrier won't treat or prevent tracheal collapse, knee problems or heart disease. They can make daily life easier. If your Chihuahua has a honking cough, trouble breathing or a skipping back leg, see your vet. This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog, talk to your vet.
Best gear for a Chihuahua
Best chihuahua harness: Gooby Comfort X Head-in Harness
Evidence level: Specs only
The Comfort X has an X-shaped chest frame that the maker says sits below the usual neck area, to keep pressure off the neck. It's lightweight mesh and machine washable. It's our dachshund harness guide's pick for minis, too.
- Size to buy: Small is listed for 5–9 lb with an 11.75–15.5" chest; the maker says size up between sizes
- Keep in mind: it goes over the head, and has a back D-ring only
Best XXS dog harness for chihuahuas: Voyager Step-In Air
Evidence level: Specs only
For the tiniest dogs, or ones who hate things over their head. It's a step-in vest of breathable air mesh with hook-and-loop plus a buckle, double D-rings and two reflective bands. Voyager's chart starts at an 11" chest: XXXS 11–12", XXS 12–13.5", XS 13–14.5".
- Keep in mind: the maker doesn't claim it's escape-proof, and a vest is warmer than a strap harness (a plus in winter, less so in summer)

Best carrier and car seat: Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed
Evidence level: Independently certified (CPS)
CPS lists the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed as CPS Certified, 5 Star, tested in August 2024 with a 15 lb test dog. It's a bed, carrier and car seat in one: the mesh dome zips off, so it's your dog's everyday bed at home and a familiar place on the road. It's 17" across and 13.5" tall, weighs 4.5 lb and has machine-washable bedding (Sleepypod).
- Size to buy: for a Chihuahua, also look at the smaller Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed Mini (CPS Certified, 5 Star, 7 lb test dog) and Sleepypod Atom (CPS Certified, 5 Star, 12 lb test dog)
- Keep in mind: enclosed, so no window view; one of the pricier carriers
CPS certifies no booster seats. Read why in our dog car seat guide.
Best bed: Best Friends by Sheri Calming Donut Cuddler
Evidence level: Tested by Whole Dog Journal
The AKC says a Chihuahua could happily spend hours snuggled under the blankets. A donut bed gives that curled-up, walled-in spot. WDJ tested this one in its washable beds review. The 23" size is rated to 25 lb and washes and dries whole (brand).
- Size to buy: 23"; WDJ says this bed can be sized down if your dog is between sizes, because curlers like a snug fit
- Keep in mind: WDJ found the fill flattens over time; it's fiber fill, not foam

Best stairs: Majestic Pet Portable Foam Pet Stairs
Evidence level: Specs only (K9 of Mine's best foam pet steps)
Soft high-density foam with a washable cover in 20+ colors. The 3-step is 15" tall and the 4-step 20", and the standard version is rated to 25 lb (K9 of Mine). Our stairs guide picks it for toy breeds on sofas and low beds.
- Keep in mind: slides on marble and wood floors; put it on a rug
For taller beds, see our dog stairs for bed guide.
Brush for long-coat Chihuahuas: Hertzko Self Cleaning Slicker
Evidence level: Specs only
For a long coat, the AKC says brush at least weekly. The Hertzko's small head (about 5 × 2.7 inches) suits a tiny dog, and a button retracts the pins so hair wipes off. A smooth coat needs only occasional brushing, so skip it if yours is short-haired.
Chihuahua owner FAQs
Should a Chihuahua wear a harness or a collar?
A harness for walks. The AKC says tracheal collapse is usually seen in certain toy breeds, and lists a harness instead of a collar to keep pressure off the throat. VCA advises the same. A light flat collar can still carry ID tags at home; just don't clip the leash to it.
What's the best XXS dog harness for a Chihuahua?
Measure your dog's chest first. Voyager's Step-In Air starts at an 11" chest (XXXS 11–12", XXS 12–13.5"), and the Gooby Comfort X Small covers 11.75–15.5". Ruffwear's Front Range Flex adds an XXXS for toy breeds, according to Treeline Review. Pick by chest size, not weight.
What car seat is safest for a Chihuahua?
CPS certifies no booster seats. It does certify some small carriers: the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed (15 lb test dog), Mobile Pet Bed Mini (7 lb) and Atom (12 lb) are CPS Certified, 5 Star. Secure the carrier with its straps on the back seat.
Do Chihuahuas need stairs or a ramp?
They're not essential, but the AKC lists patellar luxation among issues that can affect the breed, and a sofa is a long way down for a 6 lb dog. Foam stairs like the Majestic Pet set make the trip easier. They don't prevent knee problems; ask your vet if your dog limps or skips.
Do Chihuahuas get cold?
The AKC says special care must be taken in cold weather. Indoors, a donut bed with high walls lets your dog curl up and burrow. For winter walks, keep them short; the AKC says short, slow walks are enough, and to carry your Chihuahua home if they're struggling to keep up.
Small dog, small gear: get the harness size right, carry them safely, and give them somewhere warm to burrow.
