A donut dog bed is a round bed with a fat, raised rim. If your dog sleeps curled in a tight ball with their nose tucked in, it's built for exactly that: the rim is something to lean into and rest a chin on. Whole Dog Journal's advice is simple: if your pup is constantly curled into a little ball, opt for a donut-style bed. If your dog sleeps stretched flat on their side, you'll probably do better with a mattress or sofa-style bed.
Our verdict
We haven't slept a dog in these beds. Our picks are based on Whole Dog Journal's washable-bed test, Canine Journal and K9 of Mine roundups, and the brands' own specs; each section says which. For most small and medium curlers we'd pick the Best Friends by Sheri Original Calming Donut. WDJ tested it, it's sold in sizes up to 45 inches, and the smaller sizes go in the washer whole. It does flatten over time, and WDJ says so. For older dogs, we'd skip classic fiber-fill donuts and choose a round bed with a real foam base, like the Furhaven Snuggery.

A straight answer on "calming" beds
Almost every donut bed is sold as a "calming" or "anti anxiety dog bed". It's worth knowing what that does and doesn't mean.
- It's a marketing label. K9 of Mine says plainly that there isn't an official designation for a "calming" dog bed.
- We found no published research showing these beds change anxiety. So we don't claim they do, and we'd be wary of any listing that promises it.
- What's true is simpler. Many dogs like to curl up against something soft, and a raised rim gives them that. That's a comfort feature, and a good reason to buy one for a dog who sleeps that way.
If your dog is anxious, especially when left alone, a bed is not the fix. K9 of Mine also points out that anxiety can be a sign of an underlying medical issue. Talk to your vet, and see our guide to the best crate for separation anxiety for the practical side.
This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog, talk to your vet. A donut bed is a comfortable place to sleep; it doesn't treat anxiety or any other condition. New or worsening anxiety, restlessness at night or changes in sleep are worth a vet visit.
Best Friends by Sheri Original Calming Donut Cuddler (Shag)
Best for: small and medium dogs who sleep curled up; the 36" and 45" sizes for big curlers.
Evidence level: Tested by Whole Dog Journal (in its washable dog beds test).
WDJ calls this "probably the most popular donut-style bed on the market". It's a shag faux-fur donut filled with polyester fiber, with a big bolster rim and a water- and dirt-resistant bottom. The 23" size washes and dries whole; the 30" and up have a removable zip shell, so the whole bed doesn't need to fit in your washer.
What we like
- Big rim for chin-resters and curlers
- Sizes from 23" (up to 25 lb) and 30" (up to 45 lb) to 36" and 45" for large dogs
- Machine wash on gentle, tumble dry low (brand)
- Replacement shells sold separately
Keep in mind
- WDJ found the fill flattens over time, and wished the center had more fill
- Canine Journal notes complaints that the bottom is thin
- WDJ found it a bit of a hassle to get the bolster back into the cover after washing
- Fiber fill only: no foam, so not a joint-support bed
Key specs: 23", 30", 36", 45" · up to 25 / 45 / 100 / 150 lb (Shag 45"; the brand's Lux 45" listing says 100 lb) · AirLoft fiber fill
WDJ says this bed can be sized down if your dog is between sizes, because a snug fit suits curlers. For big dogs, check the weight rating on the exact listing: the brand rates the 36" to 100 lb and the Shag 45" to 150 lb.
Furhaven Calming Cuddler Long Fur Donut Bed
Best for: owners who are worried about flattening and want a bed they can refill.
Evidence level: Specs only (brand).
Flattening is the number one complaint about donut beds, and this is the one design we found that tackles it head-on. The zippered inner liner lets you add stuffing or replace it, so you can bring a tired bed back instead of buying another.
What we like
- Refillable liner
- Budget-friendly
- Four sizes: 23", 30", 36" and 45"
- Inner diameter listed for every size, which makes sizing easy
Keep in mind
- The inner ring is small: even the 45" Jumbo has a 27" inner diameter
- Inner liners are spot-clean only; the cover washes
- Furhaven says to dry the long fur completely or it mats
- Furhaven says it's not suitable for heavy chewers
Key specs: Small 23" (10" inner), Medium 30" (14" inner), Large 36" (24" inner), Jumbo 45" (27" inner)
Furhaven Snuggery Burrow Bed, Faux Sheepskin (Orthopedic)
Best for: older or stiffer dogs who still like to curl up, and burrowers.
Evidence level: Specs only (brand; included in Canine Journal's roundup, not tested).
This isn't a classic fat-rimmed donut. It's a round nest with low sides and a hood, and the reason it's here is underneath: a 3-inch foam mattress instead of loose fiber. You can choose orthopedic (egg-crate), memory-foam-top or cooling-gel-top versions. Furhaven says the foam is independently tested to CertiPUR-US standards.
What we like
- Real foam base, which fiber donuts don't have
- Three foam options
- Hood and sherpa lining for dogs who like to burrow
- Removable, machine-washable cover
Keep in mind
- Low sides rather than a big bolster rim
- The default orthopedic foam is egg-crate, the budget kind; choose memory foam for a heavier dog
- Not for heavy chewers
Key specs: 18", 26", 35", 44" round · 3" mattress · washable cover

Bedsure Calming Donut Dog Bed
Best for: trying a donut bed without spending much.
Evidence level: Specs only. K9 of Mine summarizes it in a sponsored placement, and we couldn't reach Bedsure's own site.
A straightforward round faux-fur donut in four sizes. K9 of Mine says it fits most dogs up to 100 lb, has a non-slip bottom and is machine washable.
What we like
- Budget-friendly
- Four sizes, up to about 100 lb
- Non-slip bottom
- Machine washable
Keep in mind
- K9 of Mine says the faux fur can shed
- The bolsters don't hold their shape well, per K9 of Mine
- We couldn't confirm exact dimensions on Bedsure's site
Key specs: 4 sizes · up to about 100 lb · non-slip base
FunnyFuzzy Ribbed Plush Orthopedic Donut Dog Bed
Best for: small and medium dogs who want the classic donut shape with some foam underneath.
Evidence level: Specs only (brand). Amazon availability is unverified, so check the listing.
A true round donut with an egg-crate foam base under the fill, plus two removable pillows. FunnyFuzzy aims it at small and medium dogs.
What we like
- Foam base under the donut rim
- Two removable pillows
- Non-slip bottom
- Ribbed plush instead of long shag, so less fur to mat
Keep in mind
- Egg-crate is the thinnest kind of "orthopedic" foam; WDJ was unimpressed by egg-crate in a similar cuddler bed
- The brand says it's for small to medium dogs
- Pricier than fiber-only donuts
Key specs: S, M, L · egg-crate foam base · removable pillows
How to choose a donut dog bed
1. Watch how your dog sleeps
Curled in a ball with a chin on something? Donut. Stretched flat on their side? A mattress or a dog sofa bed with an open front will suit them better.
2. Measure the curl, and check the inner ring
Measure your dog curled up asleep, across the widest part. Compare that to the bed's inner diameter, not the outside. Furhaven lists both: the 36" Large has a 24" inner ring. Big dogs often don't fit the middle of a donut, which is why owners of large dogs are often disappointed.
3. Decide on fill
| Your dog | Look for |
|---|---|
| Young, small, curls tight | Fiber-fill donut (Sheri, Bedsure) |
| Worried about flattening | Refillable (Furhaven Calming Cuddler) |
| Older or stiff | Foam base (Furhaven Snuggery, FunnyFuzzy) |
| Large curler | Sheri 36" or 45", checking the weight rating |
4. Plan for washing
Shag fur traps dog hair and needs drying all the way through or it mats. If your dog sheds heavily or has accidents, a removable shell (Sheri 30"+) or a short-pile cover is easier to live with. Check that the size you want fits your washer.
5. Chewers need something else
None of these is made for chewing, and Furhaven says so. If your dog shreds beds, look at our best chew-proof dog bed guide instead.

FAQs
Do calming dog beds actually work?
"Calming" has no official definition, and we found no published research showing these beds reduce anxiety. Many dogs do like curling into a raised rim, so a donut bed can be a very comfortable spot. For an anxious dog, talk to your vet.
Is there a donut orthopedic dog bed?
A few round beds put foam under the fill. The Furhaven Snuggery has a 3" foam mattress, and the FunnyFuzzy donut has an egg-crate foam base. Most classic donuts are fiber only.
Why does my donut dog bed go flat?
Polyester fiber packs down over time, especially under medium and large dogs. WDJ saw this with the Sheri bed. Fluffing it after washing helps, and a refillable bed like the Furhaven Calming Cuddler lets you add stuffing.
What size donut bed should I get?
Measure your dog curled up and compare it to the inner ring, not the outer size. If they're between sizes, WDJ suggests sizing down for the Sheri bed, since curlers like a snug fit.
Can large dogs use a donut bed?
Yes, if you buy big enough. The Sheri comes in 36" and 45" sizes rated for large dogs, but check the inner diameter: many big dogs end up lying across the rim rather than in the middle.
Watch how your dog sleeps tonight. If it's a tight little curl, a donut is a lovely place to do it.
