This page is for anyone living with a Poodle of any size. Three things change your gear list: a curly coat that mats near the skin if you don't brush it all the way down, three size varieties that need very different harness and bed sizes, and a coat that sheds very little, so the grooming kit matters far more than a deshedding tool.

Our verdict. We haven't used this gear on our own Poodles. We'd put the money into the grooming kit first: a slicker, a steel comb and a clipper sized to your variety. That's what the AKC's own Poodle care advice points to, and it's where owners spend the most time.

Sizes come from the AKC's three Poodle pages; trait scores are from the AKC's Standard Poodle page. Harness sizes are a starting point. Measure your dog's chest, because Ruffwear sizes by girth, not weight.

What matters for Poodle gear

The coat comes first. The AKC says that if you don't brush and comb a full-coated Poodle completely to the skin, "the hair will mat near the roots and will have to be shaved off". Most pet owners keep a shorter trim, and the AKC says many take their dog to a groomer every four to six weeks. So you need either a clipper of your own or a solid brush-and-comb routine between appointments. Ideally both.

Three sizes, three kits. A 5 lb Toy and a 65 lb Standard share a coat type and nothing else. Clipper choice, table size and harness size all split by variety.

Health, only where it changes gear.

  • The AKC lists hip dysplasia among the issues seen in Poodles, and says luxating patellas and Legg-Calve-Perthes are more likely in Toys and Miniatures. For a Standard, that's a reason we'd lean toward a bed with real foam. For a small Poodle, a set of stairs to the sofa can cut down on jumping.
  • VCA lists the Poodle among breeds with a high incidence of intervertebral disc disease. That's another reason we'd keep a small Poodle off big jumps where it's easy to.
  • The AKC says tracheal collapse is "usually seen in certain toy breeds" and lists using a harness instead of a collar to keep pressure off the throat. For a Toy Poodle, we'd walk on a harness.

None of this gear treats or prevents hip, knee, back or airway problems. A good bed, stairs or a harness can make daily life easier and more comfortable. This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog, talk to your vet.

Best gear for a Poodle

Best dog brush for poodles: Chris Christensen Big G Slicker

Evidence level: Specs only

The Big G is a professional-groomer slicker, handmade in Germany, and the maker markets it for poodle and doodle coats. The long, dense pins (30% more than other slickers, per the maker) reach into a curly coat instead of skating over the top. Line-brush in sections so you get down to the skin.

  • Size to buy: Baby G for a Toy, Medium for a Mini or Standard
  • Why it suits a Poodle: curly coats mat at the roots, and long pins reach the roots
  • Keep in mind: firm pins, so use a light hand to avoid brush burn

Pair it with the Andis Stainless Steel Pet Comb (evidence level: specs only). Run the comb through after brushing: where it snags, the brush missed a tangle. That's the AKC's "brush and comb to the skin" advice in practice.

Best dog clippers for poodles

Toy and Miniature: Wahl Bravura Lithium Ion Clipper. Evidence level: specs only. Wahl lists it for feet, face and finish work on all breeds, and for full-body clipping on small and medium dogs, which is exactly a Toy or Mini. The 5-in-1 blade moves between #9, #10, #15, #30 and #40 with a lever, it runs corded or cordless for up to 90 minutes, and it comes with six guide combs up to 1 inch. Wahl's old Bravura Lithium page now redirects to the Bravura 2, so check which one you're buying.

Standard: Andis UltraEdge Super 2-Speed (AGC2). Evidence level: specs only (Canine Journal's "Best Professional" pick). A big curly coat is where a corded, two-speed rotary clipper (3,400 or 4,400 strokes per minute) earns its place. It takes A5-style detachable blades, and Andis's universal snap-on combs (1/8" to 1") fit its #10, #15 and #30 blades. It ships with a #10 blade and no combs, so add a comb set.

For a first full clip, a #10 blade under a snap-on comb is the forgiving choice. Our dog clippers guide has the full blade-length chart and safe clipping tips.

Best dryer: SHELANDY Dog Grooming Dryer

Evidence level: Tested by Whole Dog Journal

WDJ named it its best budget dog dryer. It's light, has variable speeds and a heater you don't have to use. Variable speed matters for a Poodle puppy you want to grow up comfortable with grooming: you can start barely above a whisper. If you clip at home, Groomer to Groomer says a good bath and blow-dry is critical before you start.

  • Size to buy: one size
  • Keep in mind: WDJ notes users report it's loud

Grooming table: Master Equipment 36" with arm

Evidence level: Specs only

If you clip at home, a table saves your back. This folding table has a non-slip pebbled rubber top and a 36" arm with an 18" loop (PetEdge). The 36×24" size suits a Mini or a Standard. A Toy fits on the smaller 30" version.

  • Keep in mind: fixed height of about 32½", and never leave your dog alone on the table in the loop

Best harness for poodles: Ruffwear Front Range

Evidence level: Tested by Treeline Review

Treeline Review named the Front Range its best harness for small dogs. It has front and back leash points, four adjustment points and foam padding. Treeline wouldn't recommend it over about 30 lb, so it's our pick for Toys and Minis.

  • Size to buy: Ruffwear's girth chart runs XXS 13–17", XS 17–22", S 22–27", M 27–32", L/XL 32–42". The Front Range Flex adds an XXXS for tiny Toys (Treeline)
  • For a Standard: Ruffwear's chart goes up to L/XL, but Treeline found the Front Range short in the back on bigger dogs. Check the fit, or see the harnesses in our stop pulling guide
  • Poodle tip: straps rub on a long coat. Brush the armpits and chest after walks

Best bed: Casper Dog Bed (Standards), donut for Toys

Evidence level: Tested by TechGearLab and by Reviewed

For a Standard, we'd pick the Casper. It's foam rather than fiber fill, it has a machine-washable cover, and it was tested by both TechGearLab and Reviewed (one year with one 50 lb dog). The Medium is rated to 60 lb and the Large to 90 lb, so most Standards need the Large.

A Toy or Mini that sleeps curled up may like a small donut bed better; see our donut dog bed guide. For older Standards, see the orthopedic dog bed guide.

Poodle owner FAQs

What are the best dog clippers for poodles?

For a Toy or Miniature, a cordless adjustable-blade clipper like the Wahl Bravura is enough: Wahl lists it for full-body clips on small and medium dogs. For a Standard, a corded A5-style clipper like the Andis AGC2 handles a big curly coat better. Add snap-on combs to leave length.

How often does a Poodle need grooming?

The AKC says owners who don't keep a short trim need to brush daily, right down to the skin, or the coat mats near the roots. Many owners book a professional groom every four to six weeks, per the AKC, and brush and comb at home in between. A short trim cuts the daily work a lot.

What size dog bed for a Standard Poodle?

The AKC puts Standards at 40–50 lb for females and 60–70 lb for males. That puts most of them in a large bed. The Casper Large is rated to 90 lb, and the Medium to 60 lb. If your dog stretches out flat, measure nose to tail and add a few inches.

Do Poodles need a harness instead of a collar?

For Toys we'd say yes. The AKC says tracheal collapse is usually seen in certain toy breeds and lists a harness instead of a collar to keep pressure off the throat. For Minis and Standards it's a comfort choice. Either way, keep ID tags on a flat collar or the harness.

Do I need a high velocity dryer for a Poodle?

Not for a Toy, and a variable-speed dryer like the SHELANDY covers most homes. It's a common question on poodle forums. If you clip at home, a full blow-dry before clipping matters, per Groomer to Groomer. For a Standard in full coat, our dryer guide covers stronger options than the SHELANDY.

A Poodle's gear list is mostly a grooming kit. Get the slicker, comb and the right clipper for your variety first, and the rest is easy.
