For most wire crates, a fitted polyester crate cover in the same size as your crate is the right buy: it blocks light and movement, and you can lift a side for airflow. For a 42 inch crate, the Amazon Basics cover is the simplest match if you own an Amazon Basics crate; MidWest's QuietTime cover is the pick if you need a size from 22 to 54 inches. For winter, a normal cover won't add much warmth, so look for an insulated one, and keep the front open for air.
A crate cover is a low-cost fix for a dog that barks at every movement in the room, and it can make a plain wire crate feel like a den. The catch is fit. Covers are sold by crate length (24, 30, 36, 42, 48 inches), but crate brands differ by an inch or two, and a cover that's too short leaves gaps. Measure first, then buy.
Our verdict
We haven't used these covers ourselves. The picks are based on maker pages, the Amazon listings and the AKC's crate guidance, and each pick shows its evidence level; none has an independent test. For a 42 inch crate we'd start with the Amazon Basics 42-inch cover if your crate is the Amazon Basics 42 x 28 x 30 inch crate, because the maker says it's made for that size. If you own a different crate brand, or need any size other than 42, the MidWest QuietTime is the one we'd check first, since it comes in seven sizes. For a cold garage or porch, the TiantianBao is the only insulated cover here, but it's a single-size listing from a small brand.

Which size crate cover do I need? (24 to 48 inch)
Buy the cover that matches your crate's length, as listed on the crate. Then check the width and height against the cover's listing, because brands vary.

24 and 30 inch covers
These suit small and medium dogs and puppies in a divided crate. If you use a divider panel for a growing puppy, buy the cover for the crate's full size, not the dog's current space.
36 inch covers
This is where fit goes wrong most. Reviewers on MidWest's own page say the 36 inch cover was too short for the LifeStages 36 inch crate and left about 4 inches of the Ultima Pro 36 inch crate exposed. If your 36 inch crate isn't a MidWest one, compare the cover's stated width and height to your crate's, and size up if they're close.
42 inch covers
The most popular size, and the one we'd put first. A standard 42 inch wire crate is about 42 x 28 x 30 inches (that's the Amazon Basics crate's published size). The Amazon Basics cover is listed for a 42 x 27 x 31 inch crate, and the TiantianBao for 42.7 x 28.7 x 30 inches, so measure your crate against both before ordering.
48 inch covers
MidWest is the one brand in this guide that lists a 48 inch size. Heavy-duty crates often have different dimensions from folding wire crates, so check the width before you order. Our best heavy duty dog crate guide lists the sizes of the tougher crates.
Amazon Basics Dog Crate Cover for 42-Inch Wire Crates
Best for: a 42 inch Amazon Basics crate, in a house where your dog leaves fabric alone.
Evidence level: Specs only (Amazon listing).
The listing describes a heavy-duty cover for a 42 x 27 x 31 inch wire crate, with several zippered panels and a design that slides on and comes off for cleaning. The listing says it contains at least 50% Global Recycled Standard certified recycled polyester.
What we like
- Zippered panels let you open the side you need
- Slides on and comes off for cleaning, per the listing
- Recycled polyester content is listed on the product page
Keep in mind
- Sold for a 42 inch crate only, so it doesn't help for other sizes
- The listing doesn't mention insulation, so don't count on it for winter warmth
- Zippered fabric is still a chew target if your dog pulls it through the bars
Key specs: for 42 x 27 x 31 inch wire crates · zippered panels · at least 50% recycled polyester
MidWest QuietTime Crate Cover
Best for: any crate size from 22 to 54 inches, especially MidWest crates.
Evidence level: Specs only (MidWest).
MidWest sells this in 22, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48 and 54 inch sizes. The maker says it slips over the top of a MidWest crate, works with 1, 2 or 3 door crates, lets you lift and hook up any side, and leaves the slide-out pan reachable. It's machine washable and dryer friendly.
What we like
- Seven sizes cover almost every wire crate, including double door
- Roll-up sides for airflow
- Washer and dryer friendly
Keep in mind
- Owner reviews on MidWest's page say dogs pull it through the bars and chew it, so it's not for chewers
- Reviewers describe the polyester as thin, so don't count on it for winter warmth
- Fit varies on non-MidWest crates, per the same reviews
Key specs: polyester · 22 to 54 inch sizes · hook-and-loop corner tabs

Dog crate cover for winter
Searching "dog crate cover for winter" or "for warmth" mostly means one of three things: a dog in a garage, porch or mudroom crate, a puppy in a cold bedroom, or a small, short-coated dog who sleeps cold. A cover helps with each of these by blocking drafts and trapping some of the dog's own body heat. It does not heat anything itself.
What the experts say. The AKC says a lightweight blanket or crate cover over a crate is fine, as long as the crate stays ventilated and your dog doesn't get too hot. For keeping a dog warm when the power is out, it suggests insulating the crate with blankets over the top. The ASPCA's cold weather advice for dogs is a warm place to sleep that's off the floor and away from drafts; we cover that in our how to keep a dog warm in winter guide.
How to cover a crate for winter, step by step
- Move the crate away from exterior doors, windows and floor vents.
- Put a pad that fills the tray under your dog. A bare plastic tray is the coldest part (crate pad picks).
- Put the cover on the top and the back and two sides, and keep the front open or lifted.
- Check by hand after the first hour: if the inside feels warm or stuffy, or your dog is panting, remove the cover.
- Never cover a crate that has a plug-in heated pad in it without checking the pad's own instructions; the AKC's vet advises supervised use of electric beds, and a dog needs room to move off the heat. See our heated dog bed guide.
TiantianBao 42 Inch Insulated Dog Crate Cover
Best for: a 42 inch crate in a cold garage, porch or outbuilding.
Evidence level: Specs only (Amazon listing). We haven't found an independent test.
The listing describes a 42.7 x 28.7 x 30 inch cover in black waterproof 1200D polyester with a built-in anti-freeze felt layer, a top zipper, four side zippers for 1, 2 or 3 door crates and roll-up window panels for air. It's sold as cover only.
What we like
- The only cover here with a described insulation layer
- Waterproof fabric (per the listing) for a covered porch
- Windows and roll-up panels let you adjust airflow
Keep in mind
- A small brand with a single size on the listing, so fit on non-standard crates is a risk
- The felt's performance isn't independently tested; treat it as a draft blocker, not a heater
- Thicker fabric means you must be stricter about airflow
Key specs: 42.7 x 28.7 x 30 inches · 600D polyester with felt layer (the listing's material field; the bullets say 1200D) · zipper panels
K&H Self-Warming Crate Pad
Best for: the crate floor under an insulated cover.
Evidence level: Specs only (K&H).
This is the pad our winter guide recommends for crates: it has no cord, uses a reflective layer to send your dog's own warmth back, and comes in sizes from 14 x 22 to 37 x 54 inches. It's thin, so a big or older dog may still want foam under it.
This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog, talk to your vet. Puppies, seniors and small or short-coated dogs feel the cold most, and a dog that is shivering, lethargic or refusing to leave a covered crate needs a vet's advice rather than an extra layer.
How to choose a crate cover
1. Measure your crate, then the cover
Measure the length, width and height of the crate with the tray in. Compare all three to the cover's listing. If you're between sizes, size up.
2. Decide what the cover is for
| Goal | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Calmer in a busy room | Light-reducing fabric and a front you can open |
| Winter in a cold room | Insulated fabric, or two layers; front open |
| Travel or car | A plain fitted cover; plastic travel kennels need a kennel cover, not a wire-crate one |
| Dog that chews | No cover; try a mat and a different approach |
3. Check how it fastens
Most covers drape over the crate and hold themselves with hook-and-loop tabs. MidWest's page reviewers say the tabs only join the cover's own edges and don't attach to the crate. A toggle or tie at the bottom corners holds better.
4. Plan ventilation
Wire crates breathe well; fabric on top changes that. Leave at least the front open, and use roll-up or mesh panels for air.

FAQs
What size crate cover do I need for a 42 inch crate?
Buy a cover labelled 42 inch, then compare its width and height with your crate's. A standard 42 inch wire crate is about 42 x 28 x 30 inches, which is what Amazon Basics and TiantianBao list. If yours is a different brand, measure it and size up if it's close.
Do crate covers work for double-door crates?
Yes, if the cover has panels you can open on the sides. MidWest says its cover works with 1, 2 or 3 door crates, and the TiantianBao listing says its four zippers do the same. Check the door position matches the panel openings.
Is a dog crate cover safe for winter?
It can be, if the front stays open and the crate doesn't get stuffy. The AKC says a lightweight blanket or crate cover is fine as long as it's ventilated and your dog doesn't overheat. Skip it if your dog pulls fabric inside and chews it.
Does a crate cover keep a dog warm?
A regular thin cover mostly blocks light and drafts. An insulated cover, plus a pad on the floor and a spot away from drafts, does more. Neither is a heater, so choose a coat or a warmer room for very cold nights; see keeping a dog warm in winter.
Can a crate cover help my puppy sleep?
Many puppies settle faster in a darker, quieter crate; the AKC says a cover can make a wire crate darker and more den-like at night. Pair it with a routine from our crate training at night guide.
Should I use a blanket instead of a crate cover?
You can. The AKC calls a blanket over the crate a more economical option than fitted covers. A fitted cover stays put better and has roll-up sides, but a clean blanket is fine for a dog that doesn't chew.
Measure the crate, pick the size, keep the front open, and the cover does its job.
