A good dog crate pad turns a bare plastic tray into somewhere your dog actually wants to lie down. The catch is that the right pad depends entirely on your dog. A teething puppy needs something it can't eat, a puppy still learning house rules needs something you can wipe, and a 90 lb senior needs real foam. Get that match right, then get the size right, and you're done.
Our verdict
We haven't used these pads ourselves. The picks are based on brand specs, Whole Dog Journal's chew-proof bed tests and guidance from the AKC; each pick shows its evidence level. Only one of them, the K9 Ballistics crate bed, has a published test behind it. For most adult dogs who don't chew bedding, we'd start with the MidWest QuietTime Defender: it's made to fit MidWest wire crates and the cover goes in the washer and dryer. For big or older dogs, the Big Barker crate bed is the one we'd pick, because it has 4 inches of foam sized to fit inside the crate tray.

First: should your dog have a pad at all?
This is the question new puppy owners ask most, and the answer is "not always".
- If your dog eats bedding, take it out. The AKC says to remove a blanket if you see a teething puppy or chewy dog munching on it, because swallowed fabric can be a choking or intestinal blockage hazard.
- If your puppy pees on soft bedding, take it out for a while. The AKC notes some puppies prefer to go on something soft, and removing the bedding for a short time can help teach them not to soil the crate.
- Otherwise, match it to the dog. Humane World for Animals' crate training guide says bedding should be washable and suited to your dog's size and chewing habits.
So a bare crate for a few weeks isn't cruel; for a chewing or accident-prone puppy, it's often the safer choice. Add a pad when your dog shows they'll leave it alone.
Big Barker Orthopedic Crate Bed
Best for: large breeds, seniors and any dog that spends real hours in the crate.
Evidence level: Specs only. K9 of Mine lists it as its top crate bed; it doesn't describe testing it.
Most crate pads are a thin foam sheet. This is 4 inches of orthopedic foam, cut to sit inside the plastic tray at the bottom of a standard wire crate, so it doesn't slide or bunch. Big Barker backs the foam with a 10-year warranty that it will keep at least 90% of its shape.
What we like
- Thick foam for heavier dogs
- Sized to fit inside crate trays: for example, the Large is 39 × 25.5" for 42 × 28" crates
- 10-year no-flatten foam warranty
- Machine-washable cover (wash cold)
Keep in mind
- Not chew-resistant, and the warranty excludes chewing and accidents
- A premium pad, among the priciest here
- Check your crate's tray size against Big Barker's chart before ordering
Key specs: Small 27 × 18.2" (30 × 21" crates) to XXL 50 × 32" (54 × 37" crates) · 4" foam · washable cover
For dogs whose joints are the main concern, our best dog bed for senior dogs guide covers thicker beds for outside the crate.
MidWest QuietTime Defender Reversible Crate Pad
Best for: adult dogs who don't chew bedding, in a MidWest-style folding wire crate.
Evidence level: Specs only.
The plain, practical choice. It's sized for MidWest folding wire crates from 24 to 48 inches, the cover has a Teflon fabric protector and a hidden zipper, and one side is fleece. The cover goes in the washing machine and the dryer.
What we like
- Made to fit MidWest crates, so less bunching
- Reversible: patterned side and fleece side
- Machine-washable, dryer-friendly cover
- Five sizes: 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 inches
Keep in mind
- Foam and fabric, so not for dogs that chew bedding
- Teflon is a stain protector, not waterproofing
- Fairly thin, so big seniors may want the Big Barker
Key specs: 24–48" sizes · foam pad with removable cover · about 2.25" thick (retailer listing)
MidWest QuietTime Cushioned Antimicrobial Crate Mat
Best for: puppies still learning, and dogs who have the odd accident.
Evidence level: Specs only.
This is a crate mat, not a bed. MidWest says it's waterproof and antimicrobial, so it won't absorb water or smells, and it can even be used in place of the crate pan. You can also lay it under a softer pad as a waterproof base, or roll it up for travel.
What we like
- Waterproof, wipe-clean surface
- Can replace the crate pan
- Works as a base layer under another pad
- Rolls up for travel
Keep in mind
- Thin and firm, so not much cushion
- No chew-resistance claim
- The brand page gives few material details
Key specs: 24, 36, 42 and 48" sizes
K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Armored Padded Dog Crate Bed
Best for: dogs who chew, but need something softer than a bare tray.
Evidence level: Tested by Whole Dog Journal.
An aluminum-framed crate cot, corners included, with a padded center. WDJ picked it among the best chew-proof beds it tested, with one caveat worth taking seriously: the padding may be more enticing for dogs to chew than the unpadded version. K9 Ballistics rates it 9 out of 10 on its own chew scale.
What we like
- Aluminum frame hides the fabric edges
- Sized for 30, 36, 42, 48 and 54" wire crates
- Machine-washable center pad
- 1-year chew warranty from the brand (one-time replacement)
Keep in mind
- Padding is a temptation for determined chewers, per WDJ
- One of the priciest options here
- Firm compared with a foam crate pad
Key specs: fits 30 × 19 to 54 × 36" wire crates · aluminum frame · washable pad

Kuranda Chew Proof Aluminum Dog Crate Bed
Best for: chewers and diggers, if you'd rather buy a cot made in the USA.
Evidence level: Specs only.
Kuranda's crate cot uses an aluminum frame rated to 250 lb, with short legs for inside the crate and long legs for outdoors. Its 1-year chew warranty covers the frame and its Classic Canvas and Heavy Duty Vinyl fabrics. It's made in Glen Burnie, Maryland.
What we like
- Aluminum frame rated to 250 lb
- Comes with both short and long legs
- Chew warranty on frame plus canvas and vinyl fabrics
- Six sizes from 25 × 18 to 50 × 36"
Keep in mind
- The mesh fabric and any pads aren't covered by the chew warranty
- Firm cot, not a cushion
- Kuranda's separate Ballistic crate pad is "not chew proof" by the brand's own wording, so don't mix them up
Key specs: 25 × 18" to 50 × 36" · up to 250 lb · vinyl, canvas, nylon or mesh
MidWest QuietTime Crate Cover
Best for: dogs who settle better in a darker, den-like crate and leave fabric alone.
Evidence level: Specs only.
A dog crate cover slips over the crate to block light and visual distractions. This one fits 1-, 2- and 3-door MidWest crates, each side lifts and hooks up for light and airflow, and it leaves the slide-out pan reachable. It's machine-washable.

What we like
- Seven sizes, 22 to 54 inches
- Roll-up sides for airflow
- Works with multi-door crates
- Washer and dryer friendly
Keep in mind
- Owner reviews on the brand page often mention dogs pulling the cover in through the bars and chewing it
- Hook-and-loop tabs don't always hold against a determined puppy
- The AKC notes a plain blanket over the crate is a more economical option
Key specs: polyester · 22, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48 and 54" sizes

How to choose a crate pad
1. Measure the tray, not the label
A "36-inch crate" is the outside length. Measure the inside floor or tray and pick a pad that fills it snugly. Owners say a pad that's too small bunches up, and one that's too big buckles; either gives a puppy an edge to grab. WDJ makes the same point about tight-fitting pads being harder to pull up.
2. Pick by your dog's habits
| Your dog | Look at |
|---|---|
| Chews or eats bedding | Nothing yet, then K9 Ballistics or Kuranda |
| Puppy with accidents | MidWest Cushioned Mat |
| Adult, leaves bedding alone | MidWest Defender |
| Large, heavy or older | Big Barker crate bed |
| Restless, distracted by movement | Add the MidWest cover |
3. Plan the washing
Have a spare cover or mat. Crate accidents happen at 3 a.m., and you'll want a clean one ready while the other's in the wash.
4. Match the crate
These pads are sized for standard wire crates. Heavy-duty crates often have different floor sizes; if you use one, see our best heavy-duty dog crate guide and measure carefully.
This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog, talk to your vet. If your dog has swallowed bedding and is vomiting, off food, straining or lethargic, call your vet straight away. Frequent accidents in the crate can also have a medical cause worth checking.

FAQs
What is the best crate mat for a puppy?
For a puppy still having accidents, a waterproof mat you can wipe down, like the MidWest Cushioned Crate Mat, is the practical choice. If the puppy chews bedding, the AKC's advice is to remove it until the chewing stops.
Is there a chew proof crate pad?
No pad is fully chew-proof, but aluminum-framed crate cots like the K9 Ballistics Armored Padded Crate Bed and the Kuranda crate bed hide the fabric edges and come with chew warranties. Foam pads in "tough" covers are for light chewers only.
Should I cover my dog's crate?
Many dogs settle better with a cover that blocks light and movement, and the AKC mentions a blanket over the crate as an economical option. Skip it if your dog pulls fabric through the bars, and always leave airflow.
What size crate pad do I need?
Measure the inside floor of your crate and choose the pad that fits it snugly. Pads are usually labeled by crate length (24, 30, 36, 42, 48"), but brands differ, so check the actual pad dimensions.
Can I put a regular dog bed in a crate?
Yes, if it fits flat and your dog doesn't chew it. Round or bolstered beds often don't fit a rectangular crate well and leave edges to chew. A pad sized for the tray is usually a better fit.
Measure the tray tonight, be honest about the chewing, and the right pad picks itself.
