This page is for Corgi owners, Pembroke or Cardigan, buying gear that fits. Three things set Corgis apart: a long body on short legs, which most harnesses and furniture weren't designed for; a thick double coat that sheds every day, and more in late spring; and a lot of herding-dog energy packed into a small frame.

Our verdict. We haven't used this gear ourselves. We'd buy a harness that adjusts along the back, a ramp or stairs for the bed and sofa, and a slicker-plus-rake grooming kit. The first two follow from the Corgi's shape; the third is what the AKC itself recommends.

What matters for Corgi gear

Long and low. The AKC describes the Pembroke as "built long and low", with short, powerful legs and a deep chest. A standard harness is often too short in the back for that shape. Look for one that adjusts along the back and belly. Beds, crates and car crates need length more than height.

Jumping on and off furniture. Corgis are agile, but furniture is tall compared with 10–12 inch legs. VCA says disc problems are usually caused by chronic degeneration, even when a rupture follows a small jump. So a ramp isn't a cure for anything, but it's an easy way to cut down on the leaps. We'd add one early rather than wait for a problem.

Degenerative myelopathy (DM). The AKC says DM is more common in some breeds, including Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Among the ways the AKC lists to support a dog with DM are dog ramps for furniture and the car, and a body harness that supports front and rear. If your vet ever diagnoses DM, the ramp you already own will help, and a harness with a handle helps too.

The coat. The AKC says Pembrokes shed a fair amount daily and more in late spring and early summer. It suggests a daily once-over with a comb and a slicker brush, and a rake in shedding season. It also says a dog must be completely dry before brushing after a bath.

Ramps, stairs and harnesses don't treat or prevent back problems or degenerative myelopathy. They can make getting around easier. If your Corgi shows back pain, wobbling or weakness in the back legs, see your vet promptly. This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog, talk to your vet.

Best gear for a Corgi

Best corgi harness: Ruffwear Flagline

Evidence level: Tested by Treeline Review

Treeline Review found the Flagline the best of its test pool for dogs longer than they are tall, with a longer back and belly than most harnesses. It has six adjustment points, front, back and rear clips, and a padded top handle that Ruffwear designs for lift-assist up stairs and into cars. On a Corgi, that handle is useful for car doors and curbs; support the back end with your other hand so the spine stays level.

  • Size to buy: measure the girth behind the front legs and check Ruffwear's chart, which sizes by girth
  • Keep in mind: Treeline notes the neck isn't padded

Best ramp: DoggoRamps Bed Ramp for Small Dogs

Evidence level: Specs only (Whole Dog Journal reviewed the same brand's large ramp)

Our bed ramp guide picks this one for dachshunds, corgis and other small or long-backed dogs on high beds. It adjusts to seven heights up to 37 inches, has side rails on a 15-inch track, and folds to about 4 inches for storage (per the listing).

  • Keep in mind: about 23 lb, and it takes up floor space when set up

Best brush for corgis: Hertzko slicker plus Maxpower Planet rake

Hertzko Self Cleaning Slicker Brush. Evidence level: specs only (Totally Goldens' best slicker pick). The AKC suggests a daily once-over with a slicker and a comb. The Hertzko's head is about 5 × 2.7 inches, which suits a Corgi's size, and a button retracts the pins so hair wipes off.

Maxpower Planet Pet Grooming Undercoat Rake. Evidence level: specs only (Canine Journal's pick for thick coats). For the late-spring shed, when the AKC says a rake helps strip out the undercoat. It's double-sided (9-tooth and 17-tooth) with a no-slip handle, in small and standard widths. Keep it to the body, not the legs, head or tail.

Best bed: Casper Dog Bed

Evidence level: Tested by TechGearLab and by Reviewed

CPS lists the Gunner G1 Kennel with Strength Rated Anchor Straps as CPS Certified, 5 Star, in Small (30 lb test dog), Medium (45 lb) and Intermediate (75 lb). Corgi owner FAQs

What's the best harness for a corgi?

One that adjusts along the back as well as the chest, because Corgis are long for their girth. Treeline Review found the Ruffwear Flagline the best of its test pool for dogs longer than they are tall, and it has a handle for car doors and curbs. Measure the chest and check Ruffwear's chart.

Should my corgi use a ramp or stairs?

A ramp is the smoother option for a high bed, since there's no step-by-step hopping. Stairs with deep treads, like the Petsfit, work well for a sofa. The AKC lists ramps among the ways to support dogs with degenerative myelopathy, which is more common in Pembrokes. Ask your vet if your dog has back trouble.

How much do corgis shed?

A lot. The AKC rates Pembroke shedding 4 out of 5 and says they shed a fair amount daily, with more in late spring and early summer. Its advice is a daily once-over with a comb and slicker, and an undercoat rake in shedding season. Bathing helps loosen dead hair if the dog is dried completely first.

What size crate does a corgi need?

Length matters more than weight for a long, low dog. Measure from nose to the base of the tail and compare it with the crate's interior length. For the car, the Gunner G1 Small (21.75 inches long inside) and Medium (25 inches) are CPS Certified in those sizes.

Can corgis go on long walks?

The AKC says Pembrokes do well on long walks or slow jogs but can't keep up with a bicycle on their short legs. It also says to avoid extreme heat or cold and give plenty of water after exercise.

A Corgi needs gear that respects the long back and keeps up with the shedding. Start with the harness and a ramp, and brush a little every day.
